  1. That seems much better.

I guess we can now safely say that the US is better than the UK. Woo Hoo! Go America! (been a long time since I said that).

This album is number 1 in my heart though.

  2. This is not some great result, it still entered at #16 on the "real" chart, with weak sales. This is just Billboard taking out anything that isn't "rock", and compiling a list of the remaining albums. So take out pop, rap and country, and you get to #6.

    Don't get excited by this. : )

  3. Hey #6! Very cool!

In the scheme of things it makes more sense to break down genres anyhow I think.

Number 6......GOOD! Craig, I am excited about it. With all the rap crap and the amount of people who dig it....it really makes sense to separate all the categories.

  4. Well, doesn't change the fact that it sold so poorly. Let's not settle for this. TMU didn't do their job. The Cure can sell 24,000 copies on their own. And hopefully, that's just what they'll do, in the not too distant future.

  5. You're soooo right Craig.

Any idea how many copies the #1 chart album sold this week? Again, I'm curious because I still completely believe it's because of torrents.

And I realize "back in the day" people still had Napster, but these days...more people are off dial-up too ;p

TMU might have slacked, but I think it's only part of the equation.

  6. ac/dc was number one, sold 271,000 copies. first week they sold 790,000. all at wal mart.

  7. I'm fairly sure that NIN sold much more than this with NO label support.
Doesn't the cure have a bigger fanbase? Maybe?

HA! Understatement of the year Craig!

  10. Well it's good that they charted on the Top 200 Album chart but they only sold was 24,000 copies the 1st week? That's all? I just hope it gets better! This is quite sad and I agree little support from TMU plays a big factor with the low sales. :(

  11. TMU were too busy organizing McCain's campaign to care about The Cure... TMU definitely suck.

  12. LOL, fantac. All the money needed to promote the album went to those Wasilla Hillbillies :)

  13. I say take the DIY approach, go indie and if possible hire David Plouffe, heh.

  14. TMU via Geffen are too busy shitting their panties about the numbers for Chinese Stirfry to be concerned with a band as mighty as the Cure.....

    sigh...ah well...blinkered twits

  15. Sarah Palin had totalled her car in a horrible accident. It was a miracle to watch as she pulled herself from the wreckage without any bruises or injuries. Bystanders were shocked when she proceeded to walk away with no shock on her face and began to apply fresh lipstick to her lips. The state trooper took this moment to drive up and ask her a few questions.

"My word, your car looks like an accordian. Are you OK ma'am?" the trooper gasped.

"Yes, officer, I'm just fine" Sarah replied.

"Well, how on earth did this happen?" asked the officer as he looked over the wrecked car.

"Officer, it was the strangest thing!" Sarah began."I was driving along this road when out of nowhere this TREE pops in front of me. So I swerved to the right and there was another tree! So I swerved to the left and there was ANOTHER tree! I swerved to the right and there was another tree! I swerved to the left and there was..."

"UH, ma'am" the officer said,"There isnn't a tree on this road for 20 miles. That was your air freshener swinging back and forth"

  17. A male patient is lying in bed in the hospital, wearing on oxygen mask over his mouth and nose. A young student nurse appears to give him a partial sponge bath.
"Nurse" he mumbles, from behind the mask."Are my testicles black?"
Embarrassed, the young nurse replies "I don't know sir. I'm only here to wash your upper body and feet"
He struggles to ask again,"Nurse, please check. Are my testicles black?"
Concerned that he may elevate his blood pressure and heart rate from worry about his testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and pulls back the covers. She raises his gown and holds his manhood in one hand and his testicles in the other. Then she takes a close look and says "There's nothing wrong with them, Sir!"
The man pulls off his oxygen mask, smiles at her, and says slowly "Thanyou very much. That was wonderful, but, listen very , very closely.....

  18. A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patricia Whack.
"Miss Whack, I'd like to get a $30,ooo loan to take a holiday." Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger and that it's OK, he knows the bank manager. Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral. The frog says "Sure, I have this" and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly formed. Becoming confused, Patty explains that she'll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office.
She finds the manager and says "There's a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and wants to use this as collateral." She holds up the tiny pink elephant. "I mean, what in the world is this?"

The bank manager looks back at her and says.... "It's a knickknack, Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan. His old man's a Rolling Stone!"

  20. My friends,

How can you sell a new album without a tour
to promote it? Worst...when you decide to make
a world tour without a new album to
    promote?

The Cure are the ones to blame for this
    one...

    Cheers

  21. The word Clusterfuck comes to mind.

A whole shitload of things went wrong (or in most cases didn't even happen) in the albums promotion.

The whole 13 thing was a complete flop. No usable music videos. The first single was released nearly 7 months before the album. I have yet to see a single advert/poster/TV interview. Tour ended like 4 months early. Constant delays and internal bickering etc...

The album is pretty good though...

  22. Oversimplifying is not the solution.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't think there is a solution for the poor sales. Unless we all go out and demand people to buy the album or purchase add space ourselves because clearly someone at the Shitey U couldn't be bothered.

  24. alfio - In this cyber era, I think there are many ways to promote a new product.

For instance, AC/DC are selling thousands of their new album without visiting Japan. (They will be in Japan next Feburary, though.) It is quite amazing because AC/DC has never been so popular here.

Ten out of ten critics praise the album and the band. They are featured in every music magazine. Even some ordinary morning talk shows talked about their lates work as something you should listen to or else you are out of date. Theire label in Japan, Sony Music Entertainment, has a beautiful website of AC/DC and it's well maintained.

Of course, these are some parts of the intensive promotions done by the record company which The Cure haven't been granted.

  25. Andrew, I agree with you 1000%. This whole thing has been completely mishandled. And not just by TMU.

I hope Robert Smith doesn't think he's completely blameless in 4:13 tanking like this. He himself has made some goofy decisions in the past 24 months.

  26. i say, who gives a shit? do you like the album? do you listen to it? if yes to both, then who fucking cares how much it sells? to think the cure were going to come close to their previous sales heights is ludicrous. enjoy the album on its musical merits, and stop worrying about how poorly it's sold.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The only one reasons why anyone would worry is if that someone thinks somehow that Robert is going to stop altogether releasing music because of poor sales...
And we know Robert is above that! ;)
If he stops it's going to be because he wants to...

Yeah, it's a mess up there.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 'enjoy the album on its musical merits'....well that's 17 seconds of pure listening pleasure, then what?

And over-simplying is exactly what this situation calls for, to cut through all the tortuous hand-wringing and justification...

If I were Robert I'd be thinking one thought...either put out a decent album or hang up my boots and move on....

  31. World Charts - 20 The Cure - 4:13 Dream
    Suretone / Geffen - 62.000

Is that "62000" the actual sales number? Does it mean one every three copies has been bought in the USA? That's something!

  32. you know more than I do then...but that much is obvious...
